Khalid Knew All the Answers… But Was He Listening to Everyone?

Narrator

Come, children, sit close to me. Tonight I'm going to tell you a story about a boy named Khalid.

One evening, Fatima, Khalid, Ayesha and Umar were sitting together at home. A gentle breeze was blowing outside, and inside, everyone wanted to do something fun. Fatima's eyes lit up. "Let's play a science and technology quiz!" she said.

Everyone cheered. Fatima asked the first question: "Who invented electricity?"

Before she had even finished, Khalid called out, "Nobody invented electricity! It already exists in nature. Scientists just learned to understand it and use it."

Fatima smiled. "That's exactly right!"

Then she asked the next question: "Who made the internet?"

This time, Umar quickly raised his hand. He knew the answer and really wanted to share it. But… before he could say a word, Khalid jumped in again. "Lots of people together! Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn played a big part in building its foundations."

Umar's hand slowly came down. He said quietly, "That's what I wanted to say…"

Children, think about it. How do you think Umar felt just then? A little sad, right?

Fatima noticed. She turned to Khalid and said very kindly, "Khalid, you know so much, and that's wonderful! But give everyone else a chance to think and answer too."

Khalid looked at Umar, and he understood. "Oh! I got so excited that I just blurted it out. I'm sorry, Umar."

"That's okay!" said Fatima. "From now on, let's have a rule: we raise our hands, we wait for our turn, and we listen to the whole answer of whoever is speaking."

Everyone nodded. Then Fatima asked the next question: "What is a prompt in AI?"

And do you know what Khalid did? He knew the answer. He even raised his hand… but this time, he didn't speak. He waited quietly for his turn.

Fatima gave Ayesha the chance. Ayesha said happily, "A prompt is the question or instruction we give to an AI! Like: 'Tell me three interesting facts about ants.'"

Fatima clapped. "What a great answer, Ayesha!"

And Khalid? He was smiling too. Because today he had learned something that no quiz ever asks.

Knowing a lot is a good thing, but listening to others and giving them a chance is even better. A truly wise person doesn't only speak; they listen too.

Talk about it together

  1. How do you think Umar felt when Khalid answered before him?
  2. What rule did Fatima make, and why is it a good one?
  3. When is it hard for you to wait for your turn? What could help you wait?
